Winter Essentials: Gear Up for Cold-Weather Runs and Walks

With temperatures below freezing and snow and ice on the ground, it can be difficult to motivate yourself to get outside and run or walk! Some winter gear goes a long way when it comes to being comfortable in frigid temperatures. Check out our top suggestions for products that can help you stay warm outside all winter long.

Winter Apparel

Upper Body Layers

During the winter months, layering is crucial for regulating body temperature. Start with a base layer top and go from there! We love the Janji Repeat Merino Long Sleeve because it’s a great base layer in the winter but can also be worn alone on warmer spring days!

For your next layer, put a waterproof jacket on top to protect yourself from the elements. We are loving the =PR= Originals Packable Jacket to keep us dry during those snowy runs.

A vest is also a great outer layer option that keeps you warm without feeling too bulky.

Looking for something warm and cozy to hang out in around the house? Our current favorite is our =PR= Originals Graphic Hoodie.

Lower Body Apparel

Keeping your legs warm is vital for performance and comfort. The Women’s Brooks Momentum Thermal Tights are designed to provide insulation while allowing for full range of motion. Their moisture-wicking fabric ensures you’ll stay dry even if you work up a sweat! For men, the Smartwool Fleece Jogger is made from soft-brushed Merino that is designed to protect against the elements.

Winter Accessories

Socks

Socks are an essential part of your winter running/walking wardrobe. It’s important to keep those toes nice and warm so that you don’t have to cut your run or walk short! Smartwool socks are made from Merino wool which helps regulate temperature. This means you can wear them any time of year!

Buffs

Buffs are a go-to winter accessory because they can be worn 10 different ways! Whether you wear it as a headband, neck warmer, or balaclava, the Lightweight Merino Buffs will keep you warm, dry, and comfortable.

Gloves & Mittens

Protect your hands from the elements with a good pair of gloves or mittens. In fact, you might want to buy a few: one pair to keep in your car, one pair to keep in the house, and one pair to keep at the office! That way you'll never find yourself without your gloves!

Hats & Headbands

Keep your head warm this winter with a high-quality hat or headband. One of our favorites is the Brooks Notch thermal line which has both hats and headbands. The Brooks Notch thermal products are designed to keep you warm thanks to a notched fleece interior. Another current favorite of ours is the Tracksmith Prospect Beanie. It provides both warmth and style and is a great beanie to wear on the run or at your post-run happy hour! Lastly, the Smartwool Merino Sport Fleece Beanie and the Smartwool Thermal Merino Reversible Headband will keep you warm and comfortable all winter long.

Footwear

Trail Shoes

When it comes to snowy and icy terrain, trail shoes are a great option. The improved traction will give you good grip and help prevent slipping. The uppers are designed to keep your feet drier than a standard running or walking shoe. While trail shoes are designed with durability and protection in mind, they are still lightweight and comfortable.

Stay Motivated This Winter With =PR= Run & Walk

Even with the best gear, we know it’s hard to get outside on those chilly days. Here are a few ways to stay motivated this winter:

  • Sign up for a race: Put a spring race on your calendar. You will be a lot more willing to get out and run if you have something specific that you are training for. Check out prraces.com for our upcoming race schedule.

  • Sign up for a training program: It's much easier to run in the cold when you are running with a group! Join one of our winter training programs and meet a group of running friends to keep you motivated all winter long.

  • Set goals: Whether it's a mileage goal for the month or a run/walk streak (run or walk every day!), setting goals can help you get out the door. Share your goals with family and friends so you have people to cheer you on!
