On Cloudsurfer 3 Review: In Stores Now | PR Run & Walk

Written by Lauren Haislip

The On Cloudsurfer 3 is a soft, neutral daily trainer built around On's brand-new Surreal superfoam, with an 8mm drop and a $160 price tag. Right now you can only get it in person at specialty run shops like ours. On is holding back the online launch until early 2027, so the only way to try it before then is to walk into a store, lace it up, and take a lap.

That's a fun twist for a shoe this anticipated. Earlier models in the On Cloudsurfer line are still easy to find online, but version 3 is the first one you have to meet face to face. It joins a lineup of On running shoes that already covers everything from steady support to max cushion. Since nobody can click "add to cart" on this one yet, a 3D foot scan and gait analysis is the natural first step. We'll check whether it actually suits your stride before you commit. If it doesn't, we carry plenty of men's running and walking shoes that might.

Why the Cloudsurfer 3 Is In-Store Only

On pre-launched the Cloudsurfer 3 on October 1, 2026, exclusively through specialist running retailers. The full launch across every channel, including On's own website and On stores, follows in early 2027.

In plain terms: we can sell it to you in person, but we can't ship it to you. There's no product page to bookmark and no online checkout until the wide release.

We like this setup more than you might expect. A brand-new foam is exactly the kind of thing you should feel before you buy. Softness is personal. One runner's "pillowy" is another runner's "mushy," and the only reliable test is your own feet on a real floor.

A quick translation on drop: it’s the height difference between the heel and the forefoot. At 8mm, the Cloudsurfer 3 lands right in the middle of the pack. If you’re coming from a typical daily trainer, it shouldn’t feel like a big adjustment for your calves or Achilles. If those areas tend to get tight, a few injury prevention tools make the transition to any new shoe easier.

What's New: Surreal Foam and CloudTec Phase

Two things changed underfoot, and they were designed to work together.

Surreal Superfoam

Surreal is On's newest foam, developed in-house at its lab in Zurich. On describes it as lighter, softer, and more responsive than Helion, the foam that powered its everyday shoes until now. The Cloudsurfer 3 is the very first shoe to use it.

Here's the plain-language version. Older daily trainer foams tended to choose between soft and springy. Surreal is On's attempt to get both: a cushy landing that still pushes back when you toe off.

Re-Engineered CloudTec Phase

CloudTec Phase is the row of hollow cutouts you can see along the side of the midsole. On redesigned their shape and angle so they collapse one after another as your foot rolls from heel to toe.

Think of it like a line of dominoes tipping over in order. Instead of landing on one big slab of foam, your foot gets a rolling, sequenced compression. On's computer modeling says the combination compresses 15.5% deeper than the foam would on its own and reduces peak braking force by 9.9%.

Those are lab simulation numbers, so take them as direction rather than gospel. The goal they point toward is easy to understand, though: softer landings and a smoother roll forward, with less of that "slapping the brakes" feeling at contact.

How the Cloudsurfer 3 Fits and Feels

The upper is an engineered warp knit mesh. On designed it to stretch and adapt with your foot while still holding it in place, so it should feel snug without squeezing.

A few things to know before you try it on:

It’s not the lightest Cloudsurfer

At 285g in a men’s 8.5, it carries more weight than earlier versions. The trade is more foam and more protection underfoot. Most runners and walkers won’t notice on easy days. If you love a featherweight shoe for faster sessions, you’ll feel the difference, and something from our women’s carbon fiber plate collection will feel much quicker.

The ride leans soft

On built this shoe around one sensation: softness. That makes it a great match for recovery days, long easy miles, and anyone who spends hours on their feet. Pair it with compression socks and sleeves on recovery days and your legs will thank you.

Sizing still varies

Every brand and model fits a little differently, and many people wear different lengths and widths depending on the shoe. Most people also have one foot slightly larger than the other, and it’s smart to size for the larger one. That’s one more reason an in-store try-on matters with this model. Bring the running socks you actually wear, since a thick cushioned sock and a thin one can shift the fit more than you’d expect.

Who Should Try the On Cloudsurfer 3

The Cloudsurfer 3 makes the most sense for a few types of people.

Daily runners who want a softer easy-day shoe

If your current trainer feels a little flat on recovery runs, the Cloudsurfer 3 is built for exactly that job. It's meant to handle casual miles, recovery runs, and longer training sessions without beating up your legs.

New runners building a routine

A forgiving landing and a middle-of-the-road 8mm drop make it approachable. You don't need to change how you run to enjoy it. That's a big deal when the first few weeks of a running habit are the hardest.

Walkers and all-day wearers

Soft cushioning isn’t just for runners. If you walk your neighborhood every morning or stand through long shifts, a plush, neutral shoe can make the last hour feel a lot like the first. If your job calls for a darker look, our men’s all-black shoes collection has plenty of cushioned options built for work.

On fans who want something softer than the Cloudrunner

If you liked the On fit but wanted more cushion and less structure, this is the shoe to try next.

Who Might Want a Different Shoe

We'd rather tell you now than have you find out on mile four.

Runners who need stability

The Cloudsurfer 3 is a neutral shoe. If your feet roll inward a lot, a supportive option may serve you better. Our guide to the best shoes for overpronation is a good place to start.

Speed-focused runners

It can handle a few strides, but it isn’t built to be your tempo or race-day shoe. The extra weight shows up at faster paces. For race day,  carbon fiber plate shoes are built for speed.

People with very wide feet

Width options can be limited at launch for new models. Our list of the best running shoes for wide feet covers models with dedicated wide sizing.

Anyone who needs a shoe shipped

Since online sales don't open until early 2027, you'll need to pick it up in person.

Cloudsurfer 3 vs. Cloudrunner 3 vs. Cloudmonster 3

On's daily trainers overlap a bit, so here's how we'd sort them.

Shoe

Best For

Feel

Price

Cloudsurfer 3

Easy miles, recovery days, all-day comfort

Soft and smooth

$160

Cloudrunner 3

Runners who want a little more support

Balanced and steady

$159.99

Cloudmonster 3

Max-cushion long runs with a rolling feel

Big and bouncy

$190

The Women's On Cloudrunner 3 is the steadier choice if you want some guidance in your stride. The Women's On Cloudmonster 3 brings more height and more bounce for long days. The Cloudsurfer 3 sits in between: softer than the Cloudrunner, lower-key than the Cloudmonster.

If you can't decide, try all three back to back in the store. Five minutes of walking and a short jog will usually settle it.

Is the On Cloudsurfer 3 Worth It?

For runners and walkers who want a genuinely soft daily shoe, the Cloudsurfer 3 is one of the more interesting releases of the fall. The new foam is a real change, and the $160 price lines up with what the previous version cost at launch.

The honest caveats are weight and stability. It's heavier than earlier Cloudsurfers, and it's neutral by design. Neither is a flaw, just a boundary.

If your current shoes still have life in them, there's no rush. Ride them out, then come try the Cloudsurfer 3 when you're ready. You'll be able to find it in our stores while the rest of the internet waits for 2027.

On Cloudsurfer 3 FAQ

When does the On Cloudsurfer 3 come out online?

On plans to launch the Cloudsurfer 3 on its website and in its own stores in early 2027. Until then, it's only sold in person at specialty running retailers, including =PR= Run & Walk.

Can I order the On Cloudsurfer 3 from your website?

Not yet. On's launch rules don't allow online sales until the wide release, so the Cloudsurfer 3 is available in our stores only. Our team can help you find the right size when you come in.

How much does the On Cloudsurfer 3 cost?

On lists the Cloudsurfer 3 at $160. That matches what the Cloudsurfer 2 cost when it launched, so the new foam didn't come with a price bump.

Is the Cloudsurfer 3 good for walking?

Yes. The soft cushioning and neutral, 8mm-drop design make it comfortable for long walks and long days on your feet, not just runs.

Is the On Cloudsurfer 3 a stability shoe?

No, it's a neutral daily trainer. If you need more support, the On Cloudrunner 3 or a dedicated stability shoe may be a better fit.

Does the Cloudsurfer 3 run true to size?

Fit varies from person to person and from model to model, so we recommend trying it on before you buy. Size for your larger foot, and leave about a thumb's width of room at the toe.

Try It Before Everyone Else Can

The Cloudsurfer 3 is one of those rare shoes you can only meet in person for now, which suits us fine. Stop by any of our Northern Virginia stores or =PR= RVA in Midlothian, and we'll put it on your feet next to a few alternatives. Our store locations page has hours and addresses for every shop. Bring the socks you run in, and plan on a few minutes for a free 3D foot scan. While you're there, the women's running and walking shoes wall is right next door if the Cloudsurfer isn't the one.
